Glenveagh Castle + Derryveagh Mountains + Lough Beagh Donegal

Wild Geese

“To me how veritably a palace of enchantment” cries Edward Poe’s character William Wilson in The Fall of the House of Usher. Parts of Glenveagh Castle’s history are as dark as this horror (owner ‘Black Jack’ Adair’s land agent was murdered in 1861; a later owner Arthur Potter would disappear without a trace) but it enjoyed an Indian summer in the mid 20th century as a palace of enchantment. It is a castle in name only. Scots Irish landowner John ‘Black Jack’ Adair built it as a hunting lodge. Architect John Townsend Trench (Black Jack’s cousin) was instructed to use the Royals’ Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire as inspiration. The castellated house is much less chunky that its Scottish forerunner: the architect handles its massing well, no doubt in part due to the incremental building programme. The central house, started in 1867, was gradually extended with a variety of towers, completing in 1901.

Cast iron hoppers, corbelled bartizans, crenellated parapets, crow stepped gables, granite machicolations – the architect plundered the Scottish Baronial textbook to great effect. Perhaps he also read Oscar Wilde’s 1882 essay The House Beautiful, “The use of the natural hues of stone is one of the real signs of proper architecture.” The 16,000 hectare estate passed out of Adair ownership in 1929 when it was bought by the ill fated Harvard Professor Arthur Potter and his wife Lucy who together restored and redecorated the castle. Perhaps they read Oscar’s essay too for the décor follows his rule, “A designer must imagine in colour, must think in colour, must see in colour.”

Glenveagh Castle is too compact to fall under Annabel Davis-Goff’s category “impossible large houses” in her 1989 book about gentry in Ireland, Walled Gardens. But it does fit in with her description, “Even in the grander houses in Ireland there was rarely a bedroom with its own bathroom.” The house really came into its own when Henry McIlhenny bought it in 1937. The Bachelor Corridor is lined with appropriately single bedrooms while being light on en suites. The world (and only occasionally their partner) came to stay. Samuel Barber, best known for composing Adagio for Strings, was a frequent guest.

The American composer and pianist was also a gifted diarist, recording in 1952, “There are two towers in the castle, six drawing rooms, with fires always burning; so I confiscated one at once and messed it up PDQ with orchestration, paper, and pencils, et al, announcing that I would see no one until lunchtime; and I worked very well every day and almost finished two numbers of the ballet; lots of fun working at it. There was really no one to see for almost a week.” He continues, “Joy of joys, peat fires are burning in every room … they call it turf … and burning it has an ineffable perfume, at least for me.” He notes, “We left Glenveagh after a week of candlight and peat and Gaelic twilight.”

Another guest was the highly amusing Rafaelle Duchess of Leinster. Writing in her 1973 entertaining autobiography So Brief a Dream, “I fell head over heels with this enchanting castle. Glenveagh is a divine place to stay. You couldn’t have a more charming host. His sense of things beautiful and comfortable make you want to stay forever. There was only one snag, the undercurrent that so often flows when the guests are more fashionable than friendly, and the host is elsewhere. Every night after dinner when we gathered in the lovely red room warmed by the sweet scented peat fire, you would be wise to see to it that you were the last to leave when it came to say goodnight.” Typically, there is something of a sting in the tail of her tale. Although that pales in comparison to the description of her disastrous wedding in Knightsbridge, London, “He and I walked up the aisle of Holy Trinity Brompton on a December morning in 1932 to the altar of doom ‘for better for worse’ … mainly for worse!”

Henry McIlhenny added more than just colour to the castle: he invested in Victorian paintings by Edwin Landseer, inserted marble chimneypieces salvaged from nearby Ards House in Creeslough, and created a series of extraordinary gardens (enlisting the expertise of leading landscapers Philippe Julian, Lanning Roper and Jim Russell) climbing up the purple headed Derryveagh Mountains and falling down to the eastern shore of Lough Beagh. Mock fortifications enclose a pool raised above the lapping water’s edge. The American tycoon donated the castle and estate to the Irish Government in 1983. Three years later he died just as Glenveagh National Park was opening to the public. Visiting this remote house set in a wilderness on a scorching hot summer day, it’s impossible not to be “married to amazement” to borrow Mary Oliver’s phrase from her 2004 poem Wild Geese.

George V Hotel + L’Orangerie Restaurant Paris

Lunch in Paris is always a good idea. Even on the city’s saddest day – Nôtre Dame is smouldering. It would be a tremendously good idea to go to a hotel with three Michelin starred restaurants one of which has three Michelin stars. Les trois pour Le Cinq. Praise be for Four Seasons George V and its most intimate offering L’Orangerie. Just 18 covers; that’s 18 seats, that’s 18 people, that’s 16 other guests. It took Head Chef David Bizet a mere eight months after opening to snap up a Michelin star. We never tyre tire of the gastronomic galaxy. We’re all dressed up (Calvin Klein | Duchamp | Vivienne Westwood) with somewhere to go.

We are swept through reception on a French flow of impossibly suave direction, past achingly orgiastic triple epiphanic inducing ceiling tipping floral arrangements – lavender’s lemon – through Le Galerie to our table d’haute. Normandy born David shares, “As someone who loves nature, it is important for me to work with the wonderful products of the French regions. My cuisine has a particular elegance and subtlety, and my take on the product can be appreciated in both its taste and visual appearance.” He further describes his cooking as “a traditional French contemporary cuisine of elegance, refinement and femininity”.

The interior of L’Orangerie is as starry as its culinary accreditation: a crystalline prism presents a welcome foil to the solidity of Lefranc + Wybo’s original Art Deco white stone architecture. Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon used 2.5 tonnes of glass, 160,000 pieces of Carrara marble and a few Lalique lamps to up the ante, to max the effect, to dazzle with pizzazz. L’Orangerie overlooks the Marble Courtyard; it’s perpendicular to Le Cinq and opposite Le George (the third restaurant). We could easily get distracted by this visual feast and that’s before the feast on (textured, sculptured and abstract) plates arrives. There’s a new axis tilting lunch menu and Charles, the Monsieur Divay variety, Directeur of L’Orangerie and Le Galerie is here to explain, “We’ve more vegetables and seafood on our new menu.” Fantastique! We want to savour the vegan and pescatarian savouries.

Incidentally, the sixth Michelin Guide published by André Michelin, the 1926 edition, set out its raison d’être: “For a certain number of important cities in which the tourist may expect to stop for a meal we have indicated restaurants that have been called to our attention for good food.” Restaurants were graded in three categories, as they are today, from one star “simple but well run” to three stars “restaurants of the highest class”. La Tour d’Argent was one of the first Parisian restaurants to achieve the ultimate recognition.

Very incidentally, second floor apartments attract a premium in Paris. Much of the city was rebuilt in the 19th century under the direction of Georges-Eugène Haussmann. A uniformity of design meant the ground floor of blocks was usually commercial with the shopkeepers housed immediately upstairs. The wealthy lived on the second floor or “étage noble”. Far enough from street noise but not too many stairs to climb. The most generously sized apartments with high ceilings and long balconies are still on this floor. Monsieur Haussmann blessed Paris with four square streets of gold, a little bit of heaven come early. The lost and found generation. Paris is always worth it. Sequins of events on a glittering grid.

The Boutique Hotel Awards wear their art on their sleeve: the best of the best internationally. There’s the stampede of fashionable feet as 250 leading luxury boutique hotel professionals and influencers from 112 countries around the globe take their seats. The setting: the glorious Merchant Taylors’ Hall in the City of London has been around since 1347 although the bones of the current building date from just after the Great Fire of 1666. It’s a fabulous Tudory Elizabethanist Medievalish fanfare shifting between major and minor modes, to paraphrase the composer Samuel Barber.

The Awards are now in their eighth year and are the only organisation in hospitality where every hotel and villa is actually visited by an experienced hotel judge and specialist in a particular category. The winners are selected from over 300 nominees. Guest experience is examined from six angles: Dining + Entertainment | Design | Facilities | Location | Staff Service | Overall Emotional Impact.

A jazzy string trio strikes up in the conservatory. The party has begun. A celebration of pure wanderlust joy is underway. “It’s a wonderful job being a hotelier!” exclaims Heidi Belnap who with her brother Aaron Hunsaker and his wife opened The Harkness in Idaho. “There are only about 850 people in our town. But we’re on the freeway to Yellowstone National Park and just two hours away from Salt Lake City. We restored a 1906 building that was close to being condemned. People are just falling in love with the hotel. It’s just different for that part of the world. It’s very boutique.” Michael S Howard extols the virtues of Thailand. He should know. Michael is Managing Director of Rasa Hospitality, a Bangkok based ground that manages top end resorts and hotels in Thailand. “Our conversation is the highlight of the evening.”

Dinner is served. Starter: salad of Devonshire white crabmeat, lemon and ginger cured Scottish salmon with asparagus and crème fraîche. Main: baked aubergine parmigiana with rainbow chard, toasted almond and French bean salad. Pudding: poached fig in port sauce with mango brûlée and blackcurrant délice. Demitasse and truffles. There’s simply no better way to celebrate the halfway point between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice. Sandwiched by a Richard Dhondt Champagne reception and carriage wine from D Vine, to alter the context of a quote from the composer Sir Hamilton Harty, The Boutique Hotel Awards are “better by two bars*”.

Ox Mountains + Gleniff Horseshoe + Aughris Head Sligo

Spinning Round the Moon 

Yeats Country. The land of William Butler is Irish countryside at its most majestic. And dramatic. And awesome. And elemental. And poetic. The place names themselves carry a lilt, from Doonbeakin to Emlymoran.

The great poet may have immortalised Ben Bulben Mountain but there’s so much more countryside besides. At Drumcliffe, a tavern, café and shop cater for profane needs and then the spirit is lifted – once the church, grave and round tower have also been visited – by nature at its wildest. It ain’t called the Wild Atlantic Way for nothin’.

Half a century ago the composer of Adagio for Strings, American Samuel Barber, visited Yeats’ grave. He memorably found it “far from nowhere; there was not a sound, only swallows darting”. That serenity persists. Sheep take priority on the road laneway which winds and twists through the Ox Mountains around the dark waters of Lough Easkey. The mountain ringed valley of Gleniff Horseshoe, behind the distinctive escarpment of Ben Bulben, is where weather meets topography. A mist descends, cloaking the mountain tips of Benwisken, Tievebaun and Truskmore, and threatening to engulf the entire valley.

Seen from the coast, Ben Bulben shrinks to a distant bulge on the horizon of the golden strand of Aughris Head. Not every beach has a thatched 17th century pub but that is one of the many joys of this stretch of the cool west coast.
